Nightform

Our fifth record, cut live to tape over nine nights on Rivington Street. Eleven songs about staying up too late in a city that never quite goes quiet.

A record made after midnight

Nightform started as a rule rather than a song: nothing gets recorded before eleven at night. We took over a second-floor room on Rivington Street, ran the drums up a stairwell, put a church organ through a modular rack, and cut every vocal in a single take before sunrise. What came back off the tape was rougher and warmer than anything we had made.

There are no click tracks on this album and almost no overdubs. If you hear a radiator on Amber Room or a chair moving on Low Country, that is the room joining in. Allen Ritter mixed the whole thing on one desk, at half speed, in eight days — and then we mastered it loud, because that is how it sounds in our heads.

Play it late, and play it whole. Side A and side B were sequenced to be heard in one sitting, and the last three minutes of Sirens, Slowly only really land if you got there the long way round.
